Our trip back to the motherland

I wasn’t ever really intending on posting a this is what I’ve been up to post but well I guess I’ve gone back on that one as the little ones and I have had such a fab week I couldn’t help myself, but I will keep it brief, so here goes….

So this week the babies and I left the OH at home and embarked on a mini break back to my home town of Bristol, don’t feel too sorry for the OH, it was as much a holiday for him. Anywho it was a week to spend with my family and friends, to have company all day every day, help with the babies all day every day (and night!) and a change of scenery for all in the post Christmas come down. It really was a fantastic week for everyone, although maybe not my poor old nan who was said company and help.

Having two young babies staying with people when visiting home can be a bit of an ask so we hired a little cottage just outside Bristol in Portishead. A small and basic little abode but one that served us well and gave us our own space to mess up and make noise in without being under the watchful eye of your host.

It has been a jam packed week of visiting friends and family, from my nearest and dearest to an old friend I haven’t seen since uni. Baby 1 was treated to the delights of soft play for the first time, she went to a grand total of 6 different soft plays and amazed me with how daring she was. At a tiny 17 months she threw herself into everything, she was all over da big kids shit. Leaping down the big slides, crawling through tunnels and climbing to the very top of the three stories… Yet I take her into the toilets put the hand dryer on and she hits the deck hiding her head screaming with fear, swings and roundabouts I guess. Everyday has been filled from the minute we got up to the minute we went to bed with things to entertain and occupy the children. They have spent time with my family, been showered with attention and spoilt with endless activities. I must say even I was spoilt this week.

I have posted before about how I believe grandparents are golden and my nan well and truly out did herself this week. She is 71 going on 41 and if I am ever half the grandparent she is I will be doing well. Despite my vehement protestations she did the night shift with baby 2 everyday for the whole week! I only had baby 1 to contend with, who for the most part, sleeps the night. For the first time since baby 1 was born 17 months ago, I slept, I had 7 consecutive (ish) nights sleep, it was as though my Christmases and birthdays for the next 50 years came at once, simple things ey. But her brilliance doesn’t stop there, she handed me a belated Christmas present – a voucher for treatments of my choice at a beauticians. So whilst she and my auntie looked after my babies I indulged in an Indian head massage and a manicure… HEAVEN – see I told ya grandparents are golden! If karma is your thing I must have been mother bloody Theresa of late to deserve all this.

It hasn’t been all plain sailing, whilst in Bristol my mum was admitted to hospital but at least I was here to pay her a visit and help out where I could.

So all in all it is with a heavy heart that I will be packing up the car and waving goodbye to our little holiday home and my friends and family. I will sorely miss the company and the endless activities, which has made being mum infinitely easier but I  will take this as a little lesson back home with me – we will get out more, (which we did a lot anyway) but when flying solo with two babies (when OH is at work) it doesn’t feel quite so easy but we will face it head on. As for Bristol, we will back but for now I’m sure my nan could do with the rest, so until next time!

Keep Calm and Carry On Linking Sunday

  4. I can see that you had a fantastic time back home. There is nothing like being at home with your family and friends! I wish I can do that more often but sadly for me it involves about 15 hrs flight so not very easy! Your nan sounds fantastic for her age!! Wow 71 and she was happy to take care of your baby!! Amazing!! Sorry to hear about your mum, I hope she gets better soon. Thanks so much for sharing this at #KCACOLS, 🙂 xx

    1. Hey,I think posts like these are lovely because they give you a snapshot of some happy moments in time that you can look back on in years to come and smile with all the fond memories! It’s really lovely to hear that your Nan was a trooper and supported you so much with your little one at night times! I love going to visit family and friends you feel like you’re accomplishing something by being so busy throughout the week, and although I don’t have babies myself, I see it when my nieces and nephews are in company and we all spoil them rotten and give my family a chance to put their feet up or give them a well needed break! Lovely post 🙂 #HappyDiaries
